We've hit the season where everyone begins the rush to the garden centers in Southern Ontario. If you're thinking of raised beds for your new plants, it may be wise to think beyond pressure treated wood.
If you are looking for a permanent, architectural solution that enhances property value, it’s time toconsider a stone retaining wal for your raised beds. Stone is a rot-proof, pest-proof, and frost-resistant solution that can last as long as the home itself.
The Hidden Benefits of Stone
The benefits of stone go beyond simple aesthetics. For the serious gardener or the developer looking to minimize future maintenance, stone is the clear winner:
-
Stone absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly at night. This keeps your soil warmer during those unpredictable Ontario spring nights, potentially extending your growing season.
-
Natural and engineered stone won't leach chemicals into your organic vegetable soil.
-
Many of our retaining wall systems are engineered to lock together providing extra structural integrity from wet or frozen soil.

Select the Right Stone
At Ferrell Builders' Supply, we stock a variety of systems that make assembly as easy as building with blocks and offer a variety of different looks:
-
Tumbled Stone: Perfect for a relaxed, weathered look that complements traditional or "Modern Farmhouse" architecture.
-
Modern Linear : For contemporary builds, these sleek, smooth-faced stones offer clean lines and a high-end "Architectural" feel.
-
Natural Coping: Finish the top of your garden bed with a Natural Stone Cap to create a built-in seat for comfortable weeding and harvesting.
Keep your bed level
The secret to a long lasting stone bed that stays level for decades isn't the stone—it’s the base. Dig a trench approximately 6" deep and twice the width of your stone. Fill with 4" of compacted HPB (High Performance Bedding) or 3/4" clear stone. These materials provide "self-compacting" drainage, which is critical for preventing the bed from shifting during the Ontario spring thaw. Line the interior of your stone bed with a non-woven geotextile fabric. This allows water to drain out but keeps your soil from washing through the stone joints.
Build it Once.
A garden should be a place of relaxation, not a source of maintenance chores. By choosing the best construction materials in Ontario, you ensure your landscaping remains a structural asset for years to come.
